Aizurro, the village of Airuno in the province of Lecco

Aizurro, or Aizuro as it was once called, is a village in Airuno, a municipality in the province of Lecco. It is located in a valley west of the town and was an autonomous municipality until 1927.

Origin of the name

There are no certain sources about the origin of the name Aizurro. Some argue that the name is related to that of Airuno, while others believe it may be linked to the blue sky that overlooks the area. In a report from 1610, the name Aizurro is referred to as "Azurium".

History

The origins of the village of Aizurro are still shrouded in mystery. The first written mention dates back to 1412, when Duke Filippo Maria Visconti summoned the procurator of Aizurro to Milan to swear allegiance. By the end of the 18th century, Aizurro was a village in the province of Milan with 180 inhabitants, but a few years later it incorporated the hamlet of Veglio. In 1805, with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the number of inhabitants had grown to 176. In 1809, a decree by Napoleon determined the suppression of Aizurro's municipal autonomy for annexation to Brivio, but the municipality of Aizuro was later restored with the return of the Austrian Empire. Over time, the village reached a number of residents equal to 194, rising to 212 in 1881. In the following years, Aizurro slowly grew up to reach 209 inhabitants in 1921, when fascism decided to suppress the municipality and annex the village to Airuno.
