The Province of Imperia, located in Liguria, has a population of 208,303 and borders Piedmont, the province of Savona, France, and the Ligurian Sea. The capital city is Imperia, followed by Sanremo, Ventimiglia, and Taggia.
Physical Geography: the division into three regions
The Province of Imperia is located in the western and southernmost part of Liguria and historically divides into three regions: Imperiese, Sanremese, and Ventimigliese.
History: From the Province of Nice to the Gold Medal of Military Valor
In the past, most of the Province of Imperia was part of the Province of Nice until the Treaty of Turin in 1860. In 1923, when the capital city of Porto Maurizio merged with the city of Imperia, the province took its current name. In May 1945, part of the territory was occupied by French troops with the intention of annexing it, but Harry Truman's order forced Charles de Gaulle's army to retreat beyond Ventimiglia. The province received the Gold Medal of Military Valor for the sacrifices of its people and the activity of the partisan struggle during World War II.

Society: ethnicity, foreign minorities, and religion
According to Istat data from 2014, foreign citizens residing in the Province of Imperia were 23,104, equal to 10.66% of the then provincial population. The municipality with the highest number of foreigners is Sanremo, while Montegrosso Pian Latte is the only municipality without foreign residents. The predominant religion is Catholicism, divided between the dioceses of Albenga-Imperia and Ventimiglia-San Remo.
Culture: art cities and tourist attractions
The Province of Imperia boasts numerous art cities, including Ventimiglia with its Balzi Rossi, the Roman archaeological area, the medieval city, and the Hanbury Botanical Gardens. Imperia is characterized by the Basilica of San Maurizio, the largest church in Liguria, while Sanremo offers the famous Liberty-style Sanremo Casino and the Russian Church. The province also offers many other tourist attractions, such as the seaside promenade of Alassio, the medieval village of Cervo, and the famous seaside promenade of San Lorenzo al Mare.
