Airola
Airola: a small treasure in Campania
Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about a beautiful town in the province of Benevento, in Campania: Airola. With its 8085 inhabitants, Airola is a true hidden gem in the Caudina Valley, right in front of Mount Taburno Camposauro.
Physical geography
Immersed in nature, Airola extends on the slopes and at the foot of the Monteoliveto hill and is dominated by Mount Tairano. Among its natural treasures, the territory of Airola boasts two streams, the Tesa and the Faenza, which come together to form the Isclero river. In addition, from its territory originates the Carolino Aqueduct, coming from the source of Fizzo, which feeds the wonderful waterfall of the Caserta palace.
History
Airola has an ancient history, which dates back to the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in 997 and probably derived its name from a Lombard "feudum Airoaldi", mentioned in 820. Over the centuries, Airola has had numerous owners: from Roberto II of Normandy, "Count of Airola", it passed to Rainulfo of Alife, then was the fiefdom of Martino Toccabove, donated in 1276 to Guglielmo and Ugone di Cortillon. In 1278 it was donated by King Charles I of Anjou to Guglielmo Della Leonessa (family).
The history of Airola has not been easy: in 1437, during the war between Alfonso V of Aragon and Renato D'Angiò, the city was taken and looted by the Aragonese, led by Antonio Caldora. It was retaken by the army of Renato D'Angiò, only to be reconquered immediately after by Alfonso V. In 1460 it was besieged by Ferdinand I of Naples and sold to Carlo Carafa, who obtained the title of count. Only in 1792, with the unification of the kingdom of Italy, Airola passed to the Regio Demanio.
Symbols
The Municipality of Airola is identified by the name "City of Airola" in official acts and in the seal. The coat of arms, granted in 1997, is described as: a rampant golden lion on a blue background.
The banner, on the other hand, is a cloth divided into yellow and green parts, with the appearance of the coat of arms in the center of the cloth.
Honors
Airola was authorized in 1997 to use its own civic coat of arms and was confirmed the title of City of Italy, already assigned to it in 1754 by Charles III of Spain for its important merits. Among these, we can mention the deeds of the Samnites, who achieved brilliant victories against the Roman army, passing through the Caudio area.
Furthermore, Airola boasts numerous churches and monasteries of great historical and cultural value, where priceless works of art can be admired. For example, in the historic center of the city, it is possible to observe the church of San Giovanni Battista and the church of Sant'Antonino, dating back to the Middle Ages. Right next to these churches is a precious noble palace, the former Pellegrino palace, built in the eighteenth century.
Conclusions
In conclusion, friends, if you have the opportunity to visit Campania, do not miss the opportunity to visit Airola, a small town with great charm and a millenary history.
