Ailano

Welcome to Ailano: the pearl of the Campanian hill

We welcome you to Ailano, a small Italian municipality in the province of Caserta, in Campania. Our community has just under 1200 inhabitants and is located in a privileged position on a hill covered with woods, from which numerous springs emerge, including one of hot water with acid-sulfide properties.

Discovering the territory of Ailano

Ailano is known for its particularly suggestive location, immersed in greenery and characterized by a typical climate of the Campanian plain. In summer the air is hot and sultry, while in winter temperatures are generally cold, with occasional snowfalls that embellish the landscape.

Ailano: the pearl of Campania between history, nature, and events.

A brief history of Ailano

Our territory has hosted settlements since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by sporadic archaeological finds. There is no evidence of the alleged presence of a Roman village called "Aebutianum" mentioned by the historian Filippo Cluverio, however, the Tabula Peutingeriana seems to confirm the identification between ancient Aebutianum and present-day Ailano.

With the advent of the Normans in Italy, the fortified village was born in Ailano, then passed into the hands of the feudal lords Aquino, De Arguth, De Fossis, Rapa, Gualando and Carafa. Later, the feudal commission attributed to the municipality the ownership of the mountains Cimogna and Coppola, while during the Second World War the Germans entrenched themselves behind the hills of Cerrito and Calégna, which were difficult to overcome.

Monuments and places of interest

The historic center of Ailano is a true medieval gem: from its narrow and winding streets, you can admire the majestic presence of the castle, still powerful and imposing today, with a circular tower with a scarped base. The parish church of San Giovanni apostolo ed evangelista, dating back to the twelfth century, has been renovated several times but still preserves an inimitable coffered ceiling of modern workmanship, which has replaced the pre-existing sky dotted with stars.

Near our municipality, in the countryside, are the remains of the monastery of Santa Maria in Cingla. The monastery, founded in the year 748 or 750 by the Duke of Benevento Gisulfo II of Salerno and Scauniberga, was intended to host daughters of noble Lombards. Today only a few ruins remain, but visiting them is a unique and evocative experience.

Events and activities in Ailano

Life in Ailano is peaceful, but there is no shortage of leisure and socializing opportunities. Every year, on January 20, San Sebastiano is celebrated: the purpose is to ask for protection against diseases and weather adversities. In summer, from 15 to 17 August, the town festival is organized with food stands, music, and other activities, while on December 26, Santo Stefano is celebrated.

Moreover, in the surrounding area of Ailano, you can discover natural attractions such as the Monti Aurunci Natural Park, the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, Lake Matese, and much more. You can retrace cultural itineraries to discover ancient Roman roads and the landscapes that surround them, or savor local culinary delicacies.
