The history of Aiello del Friuli

Aiello del Friuli is located in an area inhabited since prehistoric times. The locality of Novacco testifies to the Bronze Age, but the first confirmed news of the town dates back to December 13, 1202.

After being part of the Republic of Venice (1420-1516), from 1516 to 1918 the town was part, together with the municipalities of the district of Cervignano del Friuli, of the Habsburg Empire as part of Gorizia and Gradisca. Although the landowners of the territories of Aiello and the central streets were imposing noble villas from the imperial era.

With the end of the First World War, the town definitively passed to Italy, together with the ''irredentist'' areas of Trento and Trieste.

The town is also remembered by Emilio Lussu in the first chapter of his book "A Year on the High Plateau". The brigade to which Lussu belonged was sent to rest in this town which Lussu describes as a "small town, not far from the old borders".

A small memory of the past is given by the fact that Aiello del Friuli, together with all the surrounding towns, belongs to the archdiocese of Gorizia instead of that of the archdiocese of Udine.

The Coat of Arms of the Municipality of Aiello del Friuli was recognized by Royal Decree on May 6, 1940. It consists of a red shield with a white field inside, on which a red lion rampant is depicted. Above the shield is the typical mural crown of the Municipal Coats of Arms.
