Agna: a small municipality in the province of Padua
Hi friends, today I will talk to you about a small Italian municipality called Agna, located in the province of Padua in the Veneto region. With a population of 3181 inhabitants, Agna is a quiet town that has many interesting things to offer visitors. In this summary, we will talk about its history, society, economy, administration, and twinning.
History
The toponym Agna derives from the name of the ancient Roman road Via Annia, as historical sources tell us. The municipality was first mentioned in a document from 970. Some documents attest that Agna was a possession of the Carrara family. In 1250, Jacopo da Carrara unsuccessfully tried to resist in his Agna castle to the troops of Ezzelino III, his fierce rival. The castle was besieged, Jacopo was assassinated, and all the ancient family papers of the Carraresi were lost in the events that followed.
Symbols
The coat of arms was granted by royal decree on May 15, 1924. The banner, instead, is a cloth divided into blue and red, granted by D.P.R. on October 20, 1964.
Society
Demographic evolution
Agna has undergone significant demographic changes in the past. In 1861, the town had 3014 inhabitants, but in 1961, the number had dropped to 2217. Nevertheless, Agna is still a pleasant town to live in, surrounded by nature and the beauty of the landscape.
Economy
The economy of Agna is based mainly on agriculture with strong mechanization, small industry, and craftsmanship, especially in the clothing sector. However, the town can boast one of the most influential edilceramics companies in the plain with several generations that have worked there throughout the history of the town.
Administration
Mayors since 1946
Over the years, many mayors have succeeded each other in the role of mayor of Agna. The first mayor was Umberto Loreggia, of the Italian Socialist Party, elected in 1946. After him, there were other mayors of the Italian Socialist Party, the Christian Democracy, and finally, in more recent years, of the Italian People's Party and the Center-right in Italy.
