The history of Agliano Terme

The origin of Agliano Terme dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by the discovery of archaeological finds on site and the inscription in honor of Antonio Scapula, an envoy to Britain in the 1st century AD. However, the most fascinating history is located in the Middle Ages. The third family of the lords of Agliano, one of the major families of the time, was founded by Bonifacio di Agliano and Bianca Lancia, known to be the lover of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. Due to the Spanish, the castle was destroyed in the 17th century, and today only the ruins and the Tower of the Antico Castellano remain. In 1998, the National Association of Italian Partisans awarded Agliano Terme the Gold Medal for partisan merit for its role in the Italian resistance.

The monuments and places of interest of Agliano Terme

Agliano Terme has many places of interest to see and discover. On the ruins of the castle, the church of San Pietro was built, later demolished in 1770, while on the town square there are two churches: first, you come across the parish church of Chiesa di San Giacomo il Maggiore, built in the 17th century to replace the three previous ones dedicated to San Michele, San Pietro, and San Gaudenzio. Inside the church, you can admire numerous polychrome marble altars and the exquisite 15th-century wooden crucifix. A short distance away is the Confraternita di San Michele, dating back to the Baroque period and currently deconsecrated.
