Afragola
The splendid station of Naples Afragola
Naples Afragola station is a modern architectural gem located on the Roma-Napoli (high speed) railway. It covers a wide regional user basin, from the north of Naples to the provinces of Caserta, Sannio, and Irpinia. Not only is it famous in Italy, but it was also judged among the best constructions in the world in 2017 by BBC and CNN.
The history of the station
The project for the station, by architect Zaha Hadid, was officially presented in 2003, but construction was halted shortly after due to an archaeological discovery. Construction was entrusted to various companies to solve budget issues and legal disputes, until a public tender in 2014 resumed the works. The station was finally inaugurated on June 6, 2017.
Future plans
Once the reconstruction of the Napoli-Cancello line is completed by 2023, the station will be reached by local public transport trains. There will be two narrow-gauge tracks dedicated to the suburban service of the Ferrovia Circumvesuviana. The historic section with level crossings will be suppressed, and the Casalnuovo and Acerra stations rebuilt in another location to facilitate interchange with the Circumvesuviana. In addition, a new stop is planned in the Marziasepe area within the existing shopping center.
Conclusions
Naples Afragola station is an example of architectural beauty and represents a very important hub for local and regional public transport. Works to improve the accessibility and interconnection of the station are ongoing, and soon it could become even easier to reach the beautiful regions of Irpinia and Sannio. If you have the opportunity, come and visit it: you will be amazed by its beauty!
