Torbiato: An Agricultural Village Rich in History

Torbiato, known in the Brescian dialect as "Turbiàt", is a small agricultural village of ancient origin. Located in the province of Brescia, it is the only hamlet of the municipality of Adro.

A Bit of History

In the past, Torbiato was known as Torbiato con Calino, a separate municipality under the jurisdiction of Cazzago San Martino. In 1797, Napoleon decreed that Torbiato would be considered a hamlet of Adro, but when the Austrians took control of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom in 1815, they overturned the decision.

After the unification of Italy, Torbiato grew from less than five hundred to over seven hundred inhabitants. During the fascist period, the municipality was abolished and permanently reunited with Adro.

The Churches of Torbiato

Torbiato boasts some very interesting churches from an architectural and artistic point of view. The parish church of San Pietro and Paolo is one of the most important buildings in Torbiato. Built in the early 12th century, its origins are uncertain. The building underwent expansions in subsequent eras, until it was enlarged and restructured in the late Baroque period by Gregorio and Nicolò Turbini.

Another church to visit in Torbiato is that of San Cristoforo. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, the church is of medium size and has a frescoed facade dating back to the 15th century. Inside, the church houses precious frescoes.

The church of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, built in 1957, is instead one of the examples of modern architecture in Torbiato. Its sober lines and simple structure make it very unique.

Events and Festivals

In Torbiato, there are numerous events and festivals that take place throughout the year.

On June 29th, the feast of San Pietro and Paolo, patrons of Torbiato, is celebrated. In the weeks leading up to the feast, the village comes alive with preparations and the main event is inaugurated, the Sagra delle Bocce, organized every year at the village sports field.

But it doesn't end there! On the last Sunday of September, the Polenta Festival takes place at the Torbiato sports field. Here, you can taste the typical dishes of Brescia culinary tradition, including polenta, prepared by various families in the village.

Finally, in August, the traditional San Rocco Fair takes place in the main square of Torbiato. Here, you can find stalls selling typical products and local handicrafts.
