Mazzorno Sinistro: a Welcoming Village

Mazzorno Sinistro is a characteristic village of the municipality of Adria, located on the left bank of the Po River, just 10.4 km from the city center. Despite its small size, Mazzorno Sinistro has a history dating back to 1528 and a very rich cultural and religious heritage.

History

Mazzorno Sinistro owes its name to a branch of the Po River also known as Po di Corbola or di Longola. In 1528, the counts of the Republic of Venice and owners of the area, the Querini family, began the construction of an oratory dedicated to Saint James, now disappeared.

Over the years, Mazzorno Sinistro has become famous for its two annual festivals, namely the feast of April 24 dedicated to Saint George and that of August 16 dedicated to Roch of Montpellier, patron saint of the plague-stricken. The second festivity originates from the lesser virulence of the cholera epidemic that struck the Polesine at the end of the 18th century. Despite the recommendations of religious authorities to avoid gatherings due to contagion, the inhabitants of Mazzorno continued religious functions and the procession with the saint's statue. It is said that because of that display of faith, the disease left the village.

The church preserves some Venetian-style chandeliers and a baldachin over the main altar, dated 1850.
