Adrara San Martino

Discovering Adrara San Martino

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about Adrara San Martino, a municipality of 2,187 inhabitants located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. But it's not just any municipality, it has a history dating back to the Middle Ages and a breathtaking landscape surrounded by mountains.

History

The history of the village dates back to the year 1000, when the first documents attest to the existence of the village of Adrara. Over time, the entire province of Bergamo underwent fratricidal struggles between the Guelf and Ghibelline factions, and Adrara was also affected by the immigration of people fleeing seeking refuge in these isolated and peaceful lands.

A castle was built to protect the village residents from raids. There were numerous battles, among which the Guelf Giovanni Fermo degli Alessandrini stood out, who won numerous victories against the Ghibelline factions of the neighboring towns of Villongo and Val Cavallina.

In the fourteenth century, the territory passed under the dominion of the Calepio family, who took possession of almost the entire valley. In the following century, thanks to the arrival of the Republic of Venice, finally peace settled and tranquility began to flourish with a consequent increase in demographic growth.

Territory division

New friction, however, began to arise between the two souls of the population, pushed this time by territorial motivations: the village furthest upstream, grouped under the parish of San Rocco, in contrast to the one downstream, gathered around the church of San Martino.

This campanilistic spirit led, in 1668, to the division of the territory of Adrara into two different entities: Adrara San Rocco and Adrara San Martino. However, the issues related to the division of the territory dragged on for almost a century, since the formalization of the division is dated 1754, and was resolved with the assignment of four-ninths of the territory to the community of San Rocco, and the remaining five-ninths to that of San Martino.

From the Kingdom of Italy to today

In the following centuries, no important events occurred for the community, which was only marginally affected by the changes between the Cisalpine Republic and the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom, until the advent of the Kingdom of Italy.

Among the original personalities of the place, we mention Cardinal Guglielmo Longo degli Alessandri, a high prelate who worked in the Vatican and also at the papal seat of Avignon; Giuseppe Bresciani, a notary who participated in the expedition of the Thousand, who was reported injured in the clashes in Calatafimi Segesta, just after landing in Sicily, and Eugenio Donadoni (1870-1924), poet and literary critic.

Today Adrara San Martino is a beautiful tourist resort immersed in greenery, located about 31 kilometers east of Bergamo. The municipality's territory is crossed by the Guerna stream, which forms magnificent waterfalls and creates an enchanting landscape.

Conclusions

In short, if you want to visit a beautiful municipality located in a picturesque valley, I recommend visiting Adrara San Martino. You won't regret it!
