Adelfia

Welcome to Adelfia!

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Adelfia, a small Italian municipality in the region of Puglia. Adelfia is the result of the merger of the municipalities of Canneto di Bari and Montrone in 1927, and takes its name from the Greek word 'adelphòs', which means brotherhood. With a population of about 16,471 inhabitants, Adelfia is a lively and hospitable city, located near the slopes of the central Murge and surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and almond trees. Come aboard, I'll take you to discover more about the territory, climate, and history of this welcoming city.

Adelfia: history, geography, and climate of a welcoming city.

Physical geography

Territory

Adelfia is only 13 km away from the capital city of Bari and is located between the municipalities of Sannicandro di Bari, Bitritto, Valenzano, Casamassima, and Acquaviva delle fonti. The municipal territory covers a surface area of 34 square km and reaches a maximum altitude of 340m in the territories bordering Acquaviva delle fonti and a minimum of 35m in the territories bordering Bari. The landscape is mainly characterized by vineyards, but it is also possible to find olive and oak trees in the inland area.

Climate

The climate of Adelfia is Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers and moderately cold winters. During the summer of 2007, a heatwave from the Saharan region caused temperatures to exceed 45°C. However, thanks to its distance from the sea and its low hill altitude, Adelfia can enjoy snow during the winter. In some years, significant snow accumulations have been recorded, such as in March 1987, January-February-March 1993, January 1999, and March 2003. Precipitation is abundant from November to April, with average monthly accumulations of around 60-70mm, while in the summer, precipitation is very scarce (about 20-30mm per month).

History

History of Montrone

According to legend, Montrone was founded in 982 by the Byzantine merchant Roni Sensech, who, fleeing from Longobard troops, settled on a hill suitable for grazing and trading livestock, giving birth to the village of Mons Roni. One of the first inhabitants of the village was a Byzantine priest who painted a Nativity in one of the three local caves. In 1086, the chapel Madonna del Principio was erected and consecrated by the Archbishop of Bari, Ursone.

Conclusion

I hope this mini-tour of Adelfia has been useful for you to discover more about this enchanting city. I recommend visiting Adelfia during the winter: you can enjoy the snow and the beauty of the landscape! Thanks for visiting Adelfia with me, see you soon!
