History of Acquaviva Platani
The Acquaviva Platani region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the crouched tombs and burials found on the crests overlooking the town. During the Islamic era, a farmhouse called Miknas was built, which in medieval times became the Michinese feud.
In 1425, the noble De Loharia and Castelli families, of Messina nobility, became the lords of the feud. Later, the lordship passed to the Spadafora family, who officially founded the town in 1635 with the king's concession to Prince Francesco Spadafora. The name of the town derives from the numerous springs in the area: "Aqua Viva".
With the abolition of feudalism in Sicily in 1812, the municipality of Aqua Viva became autonomous and in 1862 added the name Platani, in honor of the river that flows near the town.
