Acquasparta

Welcome to Acquasparta!

Acquasparta is a small Italian municipality located in the province of Terni, in Umbria. With a population of 4394 inhabitants, it is a place rich in history and culture. Over the years, Acquasparta has become one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

A brief history of Acquasparta

The history of Acquasparta probably dates back to Roman times, and its name derives from the Latin "ad Aquas Partas", due to its location between the sources of Amerino and Furapane in the Naia Valley. In the Middle Ages, the town was part of the so-called Arnolfe Lands. After passing under the ownership of ecclesiastical lords, it was sold to the Cesi family who built the eponymous palace there in the 16th century. In the 17th century, Acquasparta was the seat of the reconstituted Accademia dei Lincei thanks to the interest of Duke Federico Cesi, who was also a scientist.

What to see in Acquasparta

The most important monument in the town is Palazzo Cesi, built in the 16th century in place of the fortress by Gian Giacomo Cesi and his wife Isabella di Alviano. The palace was designed by the Florentine architect Guidetto Guidetti and then replaced by the Milanese Giovan Domenico Bianchi. The Church of Santa Cecilia is instead the main one in town, of medieval origin, and has an eighteenth-century appearance given to it in 1758 by the architect Francesco Bettini.

Events to attend

Every year in June, the "Festa del Rinascimento" takes place, which recalls the splendors of the life of Prince Federico Cesi, also known as the Linceo. During the Christmas season, a living nativity scene is represented through the streets of the village. Another well-known event is the children's carnival, which takes place every year during the carnival period. Finally, in November, the "Sagra del Vino Novello" takes place with the opening of the tavern and the Charity Fishpond of St. Cecilia.
