Discovering Acquappesa: a Calabrian town

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about a small town in Calabria, Acquappesa, also known as ''U Casàle'' in Calabrian dialect. Acquappesa has a population of 1722 and is located in the province of Cosenza. Are you ready to discover the beauty of this territory and the history of this town?

Physical Geography

Acquappesa covers an area of 17.75 km², of which 7 km² is forested and 6 km is coastline along the Tyrrhenian Sea. The territory is bounded to the north by the Fiumicello river and to the south by the Bagni river. The main peaks are Balze della Mortilla (364 m a.s.l.), Cozzo del Greco (626 m a.s.l.), Cozzo Moleo (675 m a.s.l.), Monte Pistuolo (972 m a.s.l.), Quercia Rotonda (302 m a.s.l.), and La Rupe del Diavolo (301 m a.s.l.). Furthermore, Acquappesa has several watercourses, including the Bagni river and the Fetida, Fiumicello, Morgione, and Sorbo streams.

Acquappesa: a Calabrian treasure between mountains and sea.

Name Origins

The town's name derives from the presence of a waterfall, which earned it the name ''acqua appesa'' (hanging water).

History

In 1927, Acquappesa was merged with the town of Guardia Piemontese to form the new municipality of Guardia Piemontese Terme, but it regained its autonomy in 1945. Acquappesa's coat of arms and flag were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 1955. The flag, in blue, refers to the famous thermal spring of Terme Luigiane, well-known since ancient times as one of Calabria's most visited and equipped hydromineral resorts.

Society

Although it has a small population, Acquappesa has a very active social and associative life and offers numerous cultural and sporting initiatives.

Economy

Tourism is a fundamental activity in the territory of Acquappesa, especially thanks to Terme Luigiane, which has a hotel capacity of 811 beds.

Infrastructure and Transport

Acquappesa is crossed by the SS 18 Tirrena Inferiore and is served by the train station, although it has not been an active stop for years.

Administration

The administration of the municipality of Acquappesa is led by Mayor Giuseppe Schipani.

Sports

Sports are an important activity in the town, and one of the most active societies in the area is the Polisportiva Acquappesa 1990, which has participated in regional amateur championships. In addition, Terme Luigiane has hosted several stages of the Giro d'Italia.

Conclusions

As you can see, Acquappesa has a lot to offer, from its geographical location to its cultural and sporting activities. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing corner of Calabria, with a welcoming population, Acquappesa is definitely a place to visit!
