Trevinano
Trevinano: a beautiful hamlet of Acquapendente in Lazio
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Trevinano, a small but beautiful hamlet in the municipality of Acquapendente in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. With its 142 inhabitants, Trevinano is a hidden gem nestled among the hills of Tuscia and near the borders with Tuscany and Umbria. I invite you to discover with me everything this locality has to offer.
The physical geography of Trevinano
Trevinano is located along the provincial road that leads from Acquapendente to San Casciano dei Bagni, a beautiful Tuscan locality in the province of Siena. The village is not only immersed in the greenery of the hills but also close to Lake San Casciano, which offers breathtaking landscapes. If you are nature lovers, I recommend visiting the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, located east of the village, and walking along the small Rio Tirolle stream.
The history of Trevinano
Like many Italian localities, Trevinano also has a history that dates back to the Etruscan era. After coming under the control of Rome, Trevinano suffered the fate of the numerous feudal lords to whom it was subjected. These include the Visconti di Campiglia, the Monaldeschi of the Cervara branch, and the Simoncelli family, until it came under the possession of the Apostolic Camera in 1687 and was ceded in fief to the Bourbon del Monte. Over the centuries, Trevinano has been involved in numerous clashes between neighboring cities and has experienced various historical events that have marked its development. Among the main monuments of the village, you can visit the castle, the parish church, and the church of the Madonna della Quercia.
The castle of Trevinano
The castle of Trevinano is a building of great historical importance, of which there are records dating back to the 12th century. In 1187, thanks to an agreement between the cities of Acquapendente and Orvieto, Trevinano was granted to the sons of Sinibaldo Visconti di Cambiglia. Currently, the castle is owned by the Boncompagni-Ludovisi, but they were never feudal lords of Trevinano. The castle boasts a coat of arms of the Monaldeschi of the Cervara on the portal and represents an example of medieval architecture.
The church of the Madonna della Quercia
The church of the Madonna della Quercia is one of the main places of interest in Trevinano, located about a kilometer from the village, along the Paglia river. According to popular tradition, the Madonna appeared on the branches of a century-old oak tree. The church, with a Latin cross plan with apse arms, was built as a sanctuary around the 16th century. Inside, you can admire a piece of the trunk of the miracle tree, partly Baroque style.
