Discovering the Province of Frosinone: a land of mountains and lakes

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the province of Frosinone, a beautiful Italian province located in the region of Lazio. This territory has a population of 465,753 inhabitants and borders the provinces of Aquila, Isernia, Caserta, Latina and the metropolitan city of Rome.

The physical geography of the Province of Frosinone

The territory of this province is characterized by mountain ranges and some of the most important rivers in central Italy. For example, the province is largely located in the basin of the Sacco and Liri rivers.

Regarding the mountains, the province of Frosinone is crossed by the central Apennines in the north and the Lazio pre-Apennines in the south, divided by a splendid valley territory crossed by the Sacco and Liri rivers called Valle Latina. The two mountain systems have different peaks: Monte Viglio in Filettino, La Monna in Guarcino, Pizzo Deta ("Pizzuteta") in Veroli and Monte Meta in Picinisco are just a few examples.

To the north of Aquino, there is the Monte Cairo group, which separates the Val Comino from the Liri valley. Further south, there are the Lepini Mountains, which descend from the vicinity of the Vulcano Laziale into the metropolitan city of Rome. Here, the province reaches modest heights with Monte Cacume near Patrica. The Lepini then slope down towards Priverno, where the Amaseno valley separates them from the mountainous group of the Aurunci Mountains that reach the mouths of the Garigliano River to the south. Among the peaks, you can admire, for example, Monte Fammera and Monte Cairo.

Province of Frosinone: Amongst Mountains, Rivers and Lakes

The bodies of water in the Province of Frosinone

As I mentioned before, the province of Frosinone also has some important lakes. In reality, most of them are artificial reservoirs for the feeding of hydroelectric power plants. For example, we find Lake Cardito in Vallerotonda, Lake Isoletta in Arce, which is originated by the waters of the Liri river, and Lake San Giacomo.

However, there are also two natural basins: Lake Canterno near Fiuggi and Lake Posta Fibreno. Additionally, there's the Solfatara pond in Fontana Liri, formed by the confluence of two springs, one of fresh water and the other of sulfur water.

The rivers of the Province of Frosinone

As I have already mentioned, the province of Frosinone is crossed by the most important rivers in central Italy. The two main river basins are the Liri Valley and the Sacco Valley. The Liri river originates from the Simbruini Mountains, which belong to the Apennines, and runs through the province of Frosinone before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Instead, the Sacco river has different names: in the upper part, it is called Rio della Valle, while in the middle part, it is called Fiume Imele.

Conclusions

Therefore, the Province of Frosinone is a beautiful area of central Italy, crossed by important mountains and rivers, with artificial and natural lakes that are just as beautiful. If you haven't visited it yet, I recommend you do so as soon as possible!
