Accumoli
Greetings from Accumoli: the city between three different regions
Hi! Today we're going to tell you a bit about the beautiful city of Accumoli, a municipality in central Italy located in the province of Rieti, in Lazio. With its 551 inhabitants, Accumoli is a truly unique city: it's the only municipality in Lazio that borders Marche, and therefore finds itself surrounded by three different regions!
Physical geography
Accumoli is located within a basin at the far northeast of Lazio, in the Umbrian-Marchigian Apennines, at an altitude of 810 meters above sea level. In this context, it's not surprising that the city's climate is typical of the Apennines. Winters are cold and snowy, while summers aren't too hot. There are several peaks within the municipal territory that exceed 1,500m, including Monte Utero (1,806.9 m) and Monte l'Inversaturo (1,723.4m). Furthermore, the Tronto River runs through Accumoli, dividing its territory in two.
Origins of the name
The name "Accumoli" has several possible origins. According to the first hypothesis, the toponym may derive from the Latin word "cumulus," meaning "pile," due to the housing structures (piles) erected by the inhabitants. The second hypothesis suggests that the name may come from the Latin "ad-culum," meaning "at the top." Finally, there's a last theory suggesting that the name derives from the aggregation of many small villages by the Normans.
History
The name "Acumulo" possibly first appeared in 1037 when Conrad II granted the land of "Summatina" to the bishop of Ascoli. However, the municipality of Accumoli originated in the 12th century, when the Tronto Valley territory was under Norman domination and later under the Kingdom of Naples. To strengthen the border between the states, local governors decided to bring together under a single city the many scattered villages throughout the valley, probably replacing the declining center of "Summata."
Conclusions
In conclusion, Accumoli is a splendid city located in a strategic position in central Italy, surrounded by mountains and located at the edge of three different regions. If you want to enjoy a breathtaking view over the Tronto Valley, we invite you to visit Accumoli, where you can discover a unique cultural heritage and history. See you in Accumoli!
