With a population of around 2203 inhabitants, Accadia is a characteristic mountain village that preserves numerous natural and cultural treasures that make it unique.

The physical geography of Accadia

Accadia is one of the highest inhabited centers in Puglia, located 650 m above sea level. The entire municipal territory is predominantly mountainous, characterized by the mountains of the Daunia, among which stands out the Crispignano mountain, which rises to a height of 1105 m. Other mountainous reliefs such as Mount Tre Titoli, an important tourist attraction of the municipality thanks to its characteristic geomorphological conformation, are also present.

The municipal territory of Accadia borders with five other municipalities in the province of Foggia: Sant'Agata di Puglia, Monteleone di Puglia, Deliceto, Bovino and Panni. Although there are no significant rivers in the territory, there are small streams and streams that enrich its water heritage.

Origins of the name "Accadia"

According to an old conjecture, the name of Accadia could derive from the name of the Italic oppidum of "Accua," destroyed in 213 BC by the Romans during the Second Punic War. Moreover, the second part of the name ("-dia") could derive from Dea or Idea, two names of the goddess Cybele venerated in pre-Christian times.

Accadia is a municipality rich in cultural treasures, one of which is the Fossi District, the oldest nucleus of the inhabited center, which still preserves the typical architecture of rural houses from the past.

Next to the Fossi District, stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine, one of the most important religious symbols of the municipality. Located over 1000 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount Crispignano, the Sanctuary represents a place of worship for many faithful who visit it every year.
